About this calculator

Estimates hot-mix asphalt tonnage for paving a rectangular area at a given thickness and density, plus the number of truck loads to deliver it.

Formula

area = length × width
volume = area × thickness
mass = volume × density
mass (incl. waste) = mass × (1 + waste% / 100)
truck loads = ceil(mass (t) / truck capacity (t))

Worked example

Defaults: 20 m × 5 m area, 50 mm thickness, 2350 kg/m³ density, 5% waste, 20 t truck capacity.

volume = 20 × 5 × 0.05 = 5 m³
mass = 5 × 2350 = 11,750 kg
mass incl. waste = 11,750 × 1.05 = 12,337.5 kg = 12.3375 t
truck loads = ceil(12.3375 / 20) = 1

FAQ

Why is density adjustable instead of fixed? Hot-mix asphalt density depends on the mix design and compaction, typically in the 2300–2400 kg/m³ range for a dense asphalt concrete, but your supplier's own mix figure is more accurate than a single fixed number — enter it if you have it.

Why doesn't the calculator cite a standard? No standard was found governing a generic asphalt quantity take-off; density is a supplier/mix figure, not a normative constant, so meta.standards is left empty.

Assumptions and limits

Density and truck capacity are disclosed estimates you should adjust to match your own supplier's mix and delivery vehicles. This calculator estimates a single uniform layer — a multi-layer pavement (base course plus wearing course) needs one calculation per layer.
