Block count is estimated from net wall area divided by a single block's footprint, not a real per-course layout.

This is a quantity take-off only. Wall, lintel, and reinforcement design must be verified by a qualified engineer.

About this calculator

Estimates the take-off for an aerated autoclaved concrete (AAC) block wall laid with thin-bed adhesive: block count from wall area minus openings, adhesive mass and bags from area coverage, bed-joint reinforcement mesh length and rolls at a chosen course interval, and U-shaped lintel blocks over each opening.

Formula

wall area = length × height
net area = wall area − Σ opening areas
block "footprint" = block length × block height (thin-bed joint area ignored)
blocks (excl. waste) = ceil(net area / block footprint)
blocks total = ceil(blocks excl. waste × (1 + waste% / 100))

course height = block height + joint thickness
course count = ceil(wall height / course height)
reinforced courses = floor(course count / every-N-courses)
reinforcement length = reinforced courses × wall length
reinforcement rolls = ceil(reinforcement length / roll length)

adhesive mass = net area × consumption (kg/m²)
adhesive bags = ceil(adhesive mass / bag size)

lintel length (per opening) = opening width + 2 × bearing
lintel blocks (per opening) = ceil(lintel length / lintel block length)

The block footprint calculation treats the thin-bed joint (typically 1–3 mm) as adding no extra area — a documented approximation, not a real per-course brick-laying layout.

Worked example

Defaults: 6 m × 2.5 m wall, one 900×2100 mm door opening, 600×200 mm block, 2 mm joint, 5% waste, 4.5 kg/m² adhesive, 25 kg bags, reinforcement every 4 courses with 30 m rolls, 200 mm lintel bearing, 500 mm lintel blocks.

wall area = 6000 × 2500 = 15,000,000 mm²
opening area = 900 × 2100 = 1,890,000 mm²
net area = 13,110,000 mm²
block footprint = 600 × 200 = 120,000 mm²
blocks excl. waste = ceil(13,110,000 / 120,000) = 110
blocks total = ceil(110 × 1.05) = 116

course height = 202 mm; courses = ceil(2500 / 202) = 13
reinforced courses = floor(13 / 4) = 3; length = 3 × 6 m = 18 m → 1 roll
adhesive = 13.11 m² × 4.5 kg/m² = 58.995 kg → 3 bags

lintel length = 900 + 2×200 = 1300 mm → ceil(1300/500) = 3 blocks

FAQ

Why is bed-joint reinforcement mesh needed only every N courses, not every course? This calculator does not specify a required interval — it is a user input, since it depends on the block manufacturer's own installation instructions and the applicable national building regulation, neither of which this calculator assumes.

Does this calculator check whether the lintel is structurally adequate? No. It only counts U-shaped lintel blocks for the bearing length you enter — an info diagnostic reminds you that lintel and wall design must be verified by an engineer.

Why doesn't the calculator cite a standard? No standard covering thin-bed AAC block, adhesive, or reinforcement quantities was found with sufficient confidence, so meta.standards is left empty.

Assumptions and limits

Block count is area-based (net wall area ÷ single block footprint), not a real per-course running-bond layout — it ignores the thin-bed joint area and any half-block cuts at wall ends or openings. Adhesive consumption (kg/m²), reinforcement interval, and lintel bearing are all disclosed estimates you can adjust. This is a quantity take-off only: wall, lintel, and reinforcement design must be verified by a qualified engineer.
